Cappadocia At the valley’s entrance, Agacalti Kilisesi

Church of Daniel Pantanassa

Descending to the Ihlara Valley, the first church seen by visitors is the Ağaçaltı Kilisesi, below and to the right. It has a cruciform floor plan and a single dome. The arms of the cross are covered with barrel vaulting that is decorated with vegetal and geometric motifs. The church has been dated from the ninth to eleventh centuries. Of its three apses only one remains intact.

Enter the church through the demolished main apse. In the decorations, the colors red, gray and yellow predominate on a white background. The Ascension of Jesus to Heaven is depicted on the dome, along with pictures of saints. The Annunciation, Flight into Egypt, Baptism, Assumption of Mary into Heaven, Three Wise Kings, and Daniel in the Lions’ Den are among the principal topics of the church’s frescos. The composition of the Three Wise Kings displays a distinctive difference from the frescoes of the same name in the churches of Cappadocia: here the three wise kings have an appearance reminiscent of Mevlevi dervishes.
