Ephesus Octagon - Although the nekropolis

Ephesus Octagon - Although the nekropolis

(Cemetery) of Ephesus is located near the Magnesian Gate, outside the city walls, there are two heroa (monumental graves) on the lower part of Kouretes Street. That they are located in the çenter of the city and are built with richly-carved marble suggests that they önce belonged to important figures in the city.

The octagon is on the south side of Kouretes Street, and to the west of the Stoa of Alytarches. It was first identified in the excavations of 1904. During investigations in 1926, the grave chamber was opened. The skeleton of a girl of about 20 was discovered in a decorated sarcophagus.
