Ephesus The gate of herakles

Ephesus The gate of herakles

A monumental structure stands on Kouretes Street in front of its intersection with Domitian Street. Because it contains a relief of Herakles, it is called the “Gate of Herakles.” It seems howewer, that these architectural elements were transported here after the severe earthquake in the fourth century CE; thus, they must belong to some other monumental structure. The “Gate of Herakles” had two stories with a broad, arched passageway carried by six columns. Reliefs of Nike decorated both sides of the arch. Part of one of them can be seen on Domitian Street. In this area, a narrow path leads to the other buildings in the north part of the city, and further to the south slope of Panayir Dagi.
