Ephesus The gate of hadrian

Ephesus The gate of hadrian

The marble road intersects Kouretes Street at its south end. To the left, the columns of the lower story of a monumental gate are visible. Restorations are stili continuing on this gate, which was built during the reign of Hadrian, and dedicated to him. The façade faces the marble road.

This gate led to the terrace houses, and Ortygia, the supposed birthplace of Artemis. The gate shows the same architectural features in its façade as the Library of Celsus, which was also erected during Hadrian’s reign. The three-storied gate has three passagevvays. The middle gate is similar to the Gate of Hadrian on the outskirts of Athens. This monumental gate probably fell victim to an earthquake in the fourth to fifth century CE.
