Kahramanmaras, with its old and public name Maraş;  gained Independence Medal with its resistance against the occupation on 5 April 1925 fromTGNA (Turkish Grand National Assembly) and its name was changed from Maraş to Kahramanmaraş on 7 February 1973.
Kahramanmaraş is located at the place where Mediterranean Region, Central Anatolia, Eastern Anatolia and Southeastern Anatolia meet. In the city southwest of which is covered by the extension of Nur Mountain, the other important heights are Berit, Engizek, Binboğa, Delihöbek and Ahır Mountains. Kahramanmaraş, Elbistan and Göksun Plains are the important plains of the city, and Ceyhan River and Aksu Streamlet are the important running waters.
